Stories from Crete: Agia Irene Gorge!

I had been wanting to hike through Agia Irene Gorge for the past three years and finally made it a week ago. I wonder what took me so long. It was an experience worth while.

Agia Irene Gorge is situated about 40 km South from the city of Chania. It is 7km long and you need about 3 hours to hike through it (at least I did). There are various ways to get to the entrance of the gorge...which ever you choose it to be (north from the village of Agia Irene or south from Sougia). We stayed in a small village near Palaiochora the previous night so we chose the village of Agia Irene as our entrance and left our car there. Also have in mind that there is a small fee of 2 euros at the entrance.

Why you should consider hiking through Agia Irene Gorge?

1) Well first of all -as you 've already seen from the pictures- it's beautiful!!! You can't imagine how much!!!

2) It's rich in flora and fauna!!! In every step of the way nature speaks to you. You can feal nature, you can hear nature, you can smell nature. All your senses are alive and interacting with nature!!!

3) It's good practice before deciding to hike through Samaria Gorge!!!

4) Because of the trees you can hike through it whatever time of the day you wish to although I would recommend that day to be in late spring or early autumn.

After you reach the exit you can either walk 5 more kilometres to Sougia, wait for the bus, which isn't so often, or grab a taxi.

And once you've reached Sougia go strate to the beach!!!  You'll love it!!!

As long as for your return to Agia Irene or Chania just ask at Roxannes cafe (hope I remember that right, hm!!!). We took the mini bus back to Agia Irene.

So next time you're in Chania put on your booties , shorts , fill your backpack with the necesities (WATER and a camera), grab a hat and off you go to Agia Irene Gorge.

Thanks for stopping by!
Love
Christina
